Counselor

Greetings,

I am Dr. Lutoya Earvin.  I will be the Counselor at Ruleville Central Elementary for the 2016-2017 school year.  In following the counseling program developed by the American Counseling Association, I am able to better serve students academically, socially, and emotionally. The school guidance and counseling program is collaborative, extending primary services through curriculum, individual planning, responsive services, and system support.  The implementation of an effective character education lessons requires focusing on social, emotional, behavioral, and academic topics. The emphasis of the guidance and counseling program is to maximize the potential of all students through a comprehensive developmental approach. As your counselor, I plan to work with all students within the educational framework, including individual, small, and large group guidance, consultations with the family, school and community resources. Ultimately assisting students in becoming healthy and effective human beings.    

Vision

My vision is that every student will acquire the academic, career, and personal skills to reach their fullest educational potential and successfully manage their lives as healthy, responsible, competent and productive citizens who respect themselves and others. I believe that all children are innately good and uniquely gifted. I believe that it is my role as a counselor to help children express the best parts of themselves and uncover what is unique and special about them. I think there are undesirable behaviors, but never bad children, and that it is my opportunity to help children learn about why some behaviors are more desirable than others so that they can make their own choices.

 

Goals

The definitive goal of guidance is to develop self-discipline.  It is my belief that discipline handled in a way that respects the dignity and the will of the child and fosters self-concept has a good chance of becoming internalized by the child.  This philosophy suggests that cooperation is preferable to blind obedience because the child has input; the child participates.  My goals also include providing individual and group counseling sessions, consulting with teachers, administrators, parents, and stakeholders.

My goal as an educator is to help every child develop into a morally autonomous person who is genuinely empathetic to others and seeks to make positive choices by their own motivation. I believe that it is my honor and privilege to spend time with children and help them develop into socially responsible members of our society.

 

Philosophy

My philosophy of guidance centers on respect for the child as an autonomous individual. It is important for me to establish a mutually respectful, trusting relationship with a child as I would any other person. By being kind, inviting, reliable, engaging, and compassionate I can reach all children. I respect each child's individuality and love to hear about their thoughts, perspectives, and ideas when they are ready to communicate them however they are able.

As a counselor, it is my job to make sure children are safe socially, emotionally, and physically at all times. I believe that experience is a great teacher and seek to provide as many safe, exploratory experiences as possible for children so that they can learn on their own. Natural and related consequences are the most effective and important ways to help children learn. For this approach to be effective, however, I have to understand the causes of misbehavior. I believe it is important to be sensitive to children's needs, wants, and behavior patterns for greater understanding before imposing a guidance strategy.
